Characteristics of projects

• Projects are unique in nature. No two projects are identical in all aspects.
• Projects deliver unique products or services as outputs (construction of a new house, design and development of a new power plant etc)
• Projects are performed by people.
• Projects are considered as successful, if they are completed on time, within budget and met the business case or the purpose for which the project was undertaken.
• Projects are managed by project managers.
• Projects passes through the phases of;
  • Initiation
  • Planning
  • Execution
  • Monitoring & Controlling
  • Closing

Why are they (projects)  executed?

• Organizations have business goals to accomplish.
• Business goals are supported by projects. When the projects are completed on time, the probability of achieving the business goals increases. Example – Construction of new factory, new power plant etc
• Individuals also initiate projects to meet their personal goals. Example – Construction of a new house.
